Heuristic evaluation, also referred to as an expert review, helps to check the usability of an app or website to ensure it is user-friendly. Unlike user testing, where users test out apps or sites, in a heuristic evaluation, apps and sites are evaluated by people called “usability experts.” To conduct a heuristic evaluation, the evaluation process is carried out against a predetermined set of usability principles by experts in the field.

While there are many heuristics available, the most commonly used one was developed by Jacob Nielsen in 1995, where ten heuristics were outlined for user interface design.

In conclusion, heuristic evaluation is an easy way to check your site in relation to predetermined guidelines, which, in turn, can help your users have a seamless experience with your product. Additionally, experts suggest that heuristic evaluation should be done by at least three usability experts for better credibility.
